The History of Beavercreek, Ohio

Beavercreek Township is one of the original four townships on the western edge of Ohio. A beautiful, fertile valley, it is well-timbered, rolling and picturesque, and noted for its fine farmlands.

The Pennsylvania and CH & D Railroads and the Dayton and Xenia Traction, ran from west to east across the township. The Dayton and Xenia Turnpike was first built from Dayton to Alpha and finished around 1858. Later it was continued onto Xenia. With Breavercreek’s proximity to Dayton and Cincinnati, the train lines made it easier for farmers and merchants to trade and sell their goods.

Beavercreek Township was the cradle of Green County. in 1803, in a little log cabin built by General Benjamin Whiteman, one of the township’s founders who would go on to be a War of 1812 hero, the first meetings took place to lay out the boundaries of Beavercreek Township. Whiteman also built the area’s first tavern that was later, and rather oddly, also used as the courthouse.

Beavercreek is home to the first mill north of Cincinnati that ground corn for the settlers in the area. This mill was named Alpha, in reference to the first letter of the Greek alphabet.

The first school in Beavercreek was a log one-room school house located on the Jacob Coy farmland on Shakertown Road. Later, Beavercreek had 11 one-room elementary schools and two, two-room schools, as well as a high school. A little over 100 years later, the schools were consolidated into one school known as Beavercreek Main.
